Connecting DIYers with Private Shops

Affordable Spaces

We connect private shop and garage owners who have underused tools and space with DIY mechanics in need, fostering a community of collaboration and support.

By renting out their underused tools and space, shop and garage owners can earn a little extra cash, while supporting the DIY community, giving DIY mechanics a place to work on their rides.

Why create diyshopfinder.com?

While in college, a buddy and I were complaining about not having any place to work on our cars. During the gripe session we came up with the idea that it would be great if there was a shop in the area that only did short-term space and tool rentals so people like us could work on cars without worrying about making our landlords angry. As college students newly married and without money, we didn't act on this idea. Within a few years, many DIY Shops opened up nationwide. These shops came and went. The need was always there. The problem I saw was that the expenses of a brick and mortar shop are extremely high and by the hour rentals come and go.

Fast forward nearly a decade and a half. I finally have a shop to call my own, but shortly after building the shop, many unexpected bills came piling up; vet bills, HVAC repairs, transmission replacement, it didn't seem to end. I was trying to think of ways to make a little extra money to cover these unexpected expenses and though; I bet there are those who could use my shop and auto-lift to work on their cars. So I listed my shop for rent by the hour on Facebook Marketplace.

Several things I learned to list my private shop for rent on Facebook Marketplace:

  1. Facebook Marketplace was not designed for by-the-hour rentals.

  2. "Tire kickers" waste a lot of time and responding to all those who say they are interested can be disheartening.

  3. Scheduling and payment can be a hassle, and I don't like haggling when I have a clear price.

  4. There are more people interested than there are private shops being listed.

  5. There is no easy way to bring together shop/garage owners who want extra cash with those who need an affordable space to work on their cars.

The mission of diyshopfinder.com is to bring together those who have tools and a shop/garage that could use a little extra cash with those who don't have a space to work on vehicles or don't have the tools to do the job. So who do I see fitting into these categories? My first thought goes to my history, college students, but it can also include, those living in apartments, those with difficult HOAs, military living on base, individuals with the know-how but without tools, or someone who uses their garage for storage.

Hopefully, this application can help private shop owners make a little on the side and help DIYers save money by doing it themselves. This is a peer-to-peer application. It is for those who like to do things themselves, for auto enthusiasts, and for those who want to save money on costly auto repairs.
